Semuliki National Park

Jungle wilderness with hot springs, unique bird species, and rare butterflies — an extension of the Congo Basin.

Discover Semuliki's Untamed Jungle

Semuliki National Park is one of Uganda's most underrated treasures — a 220-square-kilometer lowland tropical rainforest that is a western extension of the vast Ituri Forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This means Semuliki offers wildlife and bird species found nowhere else in East Africa, bringing a taste of Central African jungle to Uganda.

The park is dominated by the Semuliki River, a 160-kilometer-long waterway that meanders along the DRC border, creating beautiful oxbow lakes and swampy habitats. Semuliki's most famous attraction is the Sempaya Hot Springs, where boiling water erupts from the ground — you can even boil eggs in minutes!

For birdwatchers, Semuliki is absolute paradise — hosting over 435 bird species including 39 Guinea-Congo biome species found nowhere else in Uganda. The park also protects several primate species, forest elephants, pygmy hippos, and the incredible Shoebill stork.

Best Time to Visit Semuliki

Semuliki can be visited year-round, but the best time is during the drier months: June to August and December to February. Trails are less muddy, and forest walks are more comfortable.

The wet seasons (March-May and September-November) make trails slippery and some areas inaccessible, but this is the best time for bird watching as migratory species arrive and resident birds are in breeding plumage.

Semuliki is hot and humid year-round (20-30°C / 68-86°F). The lowland rainforest location means rain can occur any time — always pack rain gear and expect high humidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plan your jungle adventure to Semuliki

What makes Semuliki different from other Ugandan parks?

Semuliki is Uganda's only lowland tropical rainforest — it's an extension of the Congo Basin's Ituri Forest. This means you'll see Central African species found nowhere else in East Africa, including pygmy hippos, forest elephants, and 39 unique bird species.

Can I see pygmy hippos in Semuliki?

Yes! Semuliki is one of the few places in Uganda where you can see pygmy hippos. They're nocturnal and shy, so your best chance is on the evening boat safari along the Semuliki River. Sightings aren't guaranteed, but chances are good with a skilled guide.

How hot is Semuliki?

Semuliki is hot and humid year-round, with temperatures ranging from 20-30°C (68-86°F). Humidity is very high — expect to sweat! Wear light, breathable fabrics, bring plenty of water, and take breaks in shaded areas.

Is Semuliki worth visiting?

Absolutely — if you're a birder, nature lover, or seeking something off the beaten path. Semuliki is perfect for a 1-2 day visit combined with Kibale or Queen Elizabeth. It's especially rewarding for those who've already done the major parks and want something different.

How do I get to Semuliki?

By road: 5-6 hours from Kampala via Fort Portal, or 2-3 hours from Kibale National Park. The road is paved most of the way but the last section can be rough. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially in wet seasons. Charter flights can land at Semuliki Airstrip.

Can I see shoebills in Semuliki?

Yes! The Semuliki River and its associated oxbow lakes offer one of Uganda's best chances to see shoebill storks. A boat safari along the river is your best bet. While not as guaranteed as in Mabamba Swamp, sightings are common with an experienced guide.
